The FynBloem Protea Packing Facility, designed by Cape Town based architectural Practice KUBE architecture, received a highly commended award in this year's ‘AfriSam Sustainable Construction’ category. The project, which acts as the face of the FynBloem brand uses creative initiatives to lessen the environmental impact and increase sustainability, not only during construction but also in the everyday running of the facility. The facility was also awarded the CSR award for Socially Responsible Development! You can read more about what makes this project so successful here.

What this means is that we are able to perform Rational Designs according to the Regulation and Standards, and make use of the Deemed-to-Satisfy route for compliance.

Like many other Cape Town architects we received this letter in the electronic mailbox the other day...What it says is that all new building work, alterations and additions included, would have to comply with these regulations which targets the amount of electricity consumed by households for heating water, temperature regulation and lighting.

The fact that KUBE architecture is run on a constant supply of good strong coffee coupled with an increased passion for sustainable development means that we found this statement rather alarming. Adding to our discomfort was the indication that the upcoming dry months will place severe strain on the City’s water resources. Luckily Cape Town is famous for the amount of coffee consumed rather than produced but the coffee scenario did highlight an uncomfortable truth.
